March Meet & Greet + HOW Event Report

The Lowcountry Kayak Anglers' March Meet & Greet and Heroes On The Water event was held this past Sunday on Lake Moultrie, at the Amos Gourdine Landing near Russellville.

We had around 13 kayak anglers, with folks coming from as far away as Aiken and Rock Hill to participate!

It was a foggy morning but the little wind made the lake nice and calm.  Perfect for kayak fishing!  The fishing was great - not a lot of bass caught but the catfish produced well for those targeting them.  Here are some pics from the day:

Tailgating after fishing w/ hotdogs and fishing tales!

We had a good number of vets and active-duty heroes there enjoying some fishing, food, and fellowship.  We were honored to have you there!

2016 Angler of the Year Preview

April 1st begins the 2016 club year for the Lowcountry Kayak Anglers, and the return of the Angler of the Year (AOY) competition for our paid club members.

In 2015 our AOY program was a target-species competition, with a different species each month of the competition (April-November).  Anglers tried to catch the biggest fish each month - submitting pics of the fish on a fish ruler/measuring device with unique identifier.  Anglers catches were ranked by length at the end of each month, with 1st place receiving 200 points for the month - 2nd place would get 199, 3rd received 198, and so forth.  These points accumulated over the course of the competition and the club member with the most points at the conclusion of the competition was crowned "Angler of the Year".

There are a few changes for our 2016 Angler of the Year competition, as decided by membership at recent meetings:

-The addition of a "Jr Angler of the Year" prize for the highest-finishing minor family member.

-The "Battle at Paradise" benefit tournament for HOW, the August "Bag-a-Bream" panfish competition, and the "Trout for Tots" trout tournament will each count as 'bonus points' for the Angler of the Year.

-The 1st place winner of each target-species month of the competition will receive a $20 gift certificate to a LKA-sponsoring retailer and be recognized as "Angler of the Month".

A typical CPR photo for tournament submission - note the fish's nose on zero - tail to the right.  Also note the tournament identifier visible in the picture.  The measurement is easy for the tournament director to read and score!
There have been some concerns about measuring devices.  We highly recommend a ruler that is made for measuring fish - such as the Hawg Trough, ruler, Plano Bump Board, SCDNR ruler sticker, etc.  Complete AOY guidelines will be released prior to April 1st.

We look forward to 2016 - good luck to all our anglers and safe fishing!
